Once the bags and boxes were on the bed, Cole spun on his heels and hightailed it out of the house. He didn’t look back, not from the porch, not from the barn, not from the east field. He didn’t look back until he was safely mounted on his tractor and back in his element.

He ran a hand through his hair. Bethany’s tears in the truck rocketed him to the past. He thought of his mother and her tear-stained cheeks after Joel’s death. He remembered her trying to comfort him, Peter, and a small crying Emma. It opened an old wound best forgotten. He tried to harden himself against the pain and leave the past where it belonged. But there was something about Bethany that made him feel things, as if they were somehow connected.

His mood grew dark. He began to rethink his job offer. He didn’t want to deal with old emotions. He had faced many of the old pains when Logan and he reconciled, but it was still hard to leave the past in the past from time to time.

Cole stretched, trying to unknot the tension that was building in his chest and shake off the feelings. He couldn’t withdraw his offer, even if it caused him to struggle. A job offer was as good as a promise. And he was a man who kept his promises.

Just as he was about to fire up his tractor and get to work, Logan came driving toward him and pulled up alongside the tractor.

“You okay?” Logan asked.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” Cole replied in his usual grumpy voice, not liking how Logan was staring at him. “I have work to do. And if I recall, aren’t you supposed to be herding the cattle out of the west fields to take them toward the slope of the north ridge?”

“Max is saddling the horses. Emma wanted me to come check on you, is all. She heard Olivia crying when you drove off.”

I’m not home ten minutes and Emma is sending out spies. It chafed his pride. He would show his little sister that he could be tolerant to change. He didn’t have to be a hermit. He could adapt.

“Tell Emma that I’m a big boy, and I have my big-boy pants on. Everything is fine.”

A smile split Logan’s face and he laughed. “It would be more fun if you told her that yourself.”

“I have work to do, and so do you.”

“I’m going, I’m going. Emma and I will swing by tomorrow to see how Bethany is settling in.”

“Do that,” Cole said, wanting Logan out of his hair so he could get his work done. He wanted to forget the regretful expression on Bethany’s face when she’d cried in front of him. He should have comforted her; should have told her everything was going to be okay. But he didn’t, and he hated himself for it.

Logan waved as his truck crept away from his tractor. Cole revved up the tractor and let the noise of the engine drown out every other sound around him.
